Layers problem

Why do layers not appear when I open a drawing in AutoCAD LT 2016?

I can see the layer object (in this case all text items) when I hover the cursor over it, I can even move it and change it's layer, but when I let go of it, it disappears.

All layers are turned on, thawed and visible. I cannot see why this should be happening.
