Layer Properties Manager in ribbon does not work, freezes

I just reloaded AutoCAD LT 2011 on a new computer and the Layer Properties Box on the Ribbon is not working. I  click on a layer and a pull down list of the layers in my drawing should show up but it doesn't - it just freezes and then I get (Not Responding) in the title. Please help - this is killing me having to go into the Layers Proporties Box all the time to change a layer.
